That’s what I heard myself saying while I waited to board a flight to Appleton, Wisc. It is interesting to look around to see familiar faces and vibes of those meandering toward home. And then there’s the familiar accent that most who meet me for the first time can identify.
I’m ready. I have my winter coat on, which will work for today. It should be in the 60s when I land. My sister, Beth, promised to bring me mittens or gloves – strange to be saying this. I’ve been in Florida for 37 years now. I know one thing for sure: this ‘winter coat’ will never make it in 28-degree weather, which is one of the high temperatures while I’ll be in Wisconsin. Heck, it’s predicted to snow one day. I thought I’d make it through the winter without it – thinking of my friends in the Panhandle who played in a good four or five inches of snow for a couple of days earlier this year. While packing on Thursday, I just about came unglued because I couldn’t find my one pair of long johns. Thankfully, they appeared. I took my garbage out and realized that I had left one bag of leftovers in the refrigerator. I know my daughter heard me gripe under my breath – ‘so much for being perfect.’ My daughter piped in: ‘Yup.’ I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be going to Wisconsin so soon. I thought for sure it’d be a little closer to warmer weather, which is the only time to go. Life happens; plans go array sometimes. Backstory: Last time I made Wisconsin in the winter was for my mom’s funeral. My daughter and I drove up toward the end of December, beginning of January many years ago. One minute in Illinois it was 50 degrees; the next it was minus something in Wisconsin. I’m going to see my sisters and the rest of the family. My oldest sister is Sue, and I have written about her a couple of times on this blog. She came to visit last summer. We had a good time – went to the beach, went to quilt stores, ate good food and ice cream. Her son came for about a week during the visit. My daughter and nephew took her to Disney. My younger sister, Beth, is picking me up from the airport. Did I mention she promised to bring mittens or gloves? Hehehe We will have a few days to reminisce about the old days, good and less than good. It seems like such a little time to cover 60 years. I’m so glad that my sisters and I have stayed connected through the years. It’s never too late to check in with loved ones. Take the time now. Blessings of Peace and Love
